Raasay Kiln

Description

Before my visit to the Hebridean Island of Raasay, I didn't know about history of the iron mine workings apart from learning a bit from reading up on the geological background. It's worth reading up about as its quite an intriguing story. This pic shows a 'calcination kiln base' which was in use during the time of the mine being opened between 1912 and 1942. Oh and we mustn't forget the sheep in the shot, they're absolutely everywhere on the Island!

There is also a dismantled railway on the Island and the various abandoned mine buildings not even mentioning the abandoned crofting villages, carved symbol stones etc. It really is an Island with a rich history!
