I have written this journal entry to commit myself to writing patterns for my stuff. Being on etsy has enabled me to do what I enjoy for a little bit of money. The trouble is crochet takes FOREVER and so I was feeling like I was working in a sweat shop! So, I think patterns are the way forward for me and I will make as much or as little as I want to. My main reasoning for this is that patterns don't need too much maintenance whilst there up, so hopefully can provide me with a little bit of money when I'm a full time student again. I'm going to plan to make a minimum of two patterns a month (hopefully 4) and will mostly include all the paleo creatures I've been making. I figure they're fairly unique so hopefully will sell ok.

The one thing I've found with selling crafts online, is the whole accounting/book keeping thing. As I felt it was right to register as a sole trader (which seems stupid if I'm not even making much of a profit and not many sales), I did that last week. This is because I may sell more in the future and you can get fined for not declaring in the first three months of trading. However, I'm also currently on job seekers allowance so need to tell them about it and will probably have to take spreadsheets in to show them if I've been making over a certain amount. I hope they don't tell me off for not declaring my sales since Feb, but I didn't expect to sell hardly anything and wasn't in it to make any money then. It all seems a bit confusing, but apparently HMRC are helpful on the phone so I may give them a call. My Dad said I should have kept quiet, but the trouble is that trading on the internet is infinitely easier to find out than cash in hand. It all seems a bit much just for a hobbyist crafter :/ The other option is to sign off from job seekers.

On top of that, I'm currently trying to complete as many scholarship applications as I can, fretting over accommodation for September, worrying about still not having a summer job and fretting about getting a career development loan :S

Ooh, do you have most of your patterns memorized? O: And ohhh, if you sale the patterns, I'm sure you'll make a good deal of money that way! Will definitely help you out during the school semester!

Good luck with sorting out the registration and everything. I'm not sure how it works in your country, but same here - it's a little difficult to tuck away internet sales as opposed to cash in hand. Not sure how it works in the UK as far as reporting how much money you make, if you must make so much before it becomes important to report sales or not. It's so varying from country to country. But I hope you can get sorted, and hopefully they understand that at least you're trying to take care of it now, instead of just ignoring it and trying to continue to do things quietly.

Good luck with scholarships and sorting out things for the summer. ;-;
